Does your past visit you? Mine does. I think it never really is the past. Today gets weighed on the scale of yesterday and tomorrow. The present tense seems to be trapped between past and future. 

That you cannot go back and change the past is a lament shared by most of us. Even so, yesterday appears out of nowhere as an unexpected meteor streaking across our horizon. Since my past walks unfettered in the present, it only seems right that I be granted equal access. 

Of course, we cannot go back…but what if…? Imagine what you might write if allowed to send messages back through time.

For me, it has been an extraordinary life. Only not in the terms of what you may think when you hear the word extraordinary. 

Two decades ago, I chose extraordinary rebellion the day I walked out on Jesus to live life on my terms. Success visited me for a while, but then came the extraordinary cost. 

I know the extraordinary pain of burying a child, brother, mother, niece, and nephew. They died in separate tragedies over an eighteen-month period. 

After the death of our oldest child, Caleb, extraordinary grace, mercy, and love found my family.  Extraordinary loneliness bit me as I sat in prison awaiting a judge’s decision to set me free. Along my journey, I caught glimpses of an extraordinary Jesus.

Yes, I have plenty to say to that younger version of me. I pray one day these letters reach back through time and land on my doorstep. For now, I entrust them to you. 

Do me a favor, and keep an eye out for me in my youth. I hope against hope you find him.
